The SeGa Canvas provides a framework for serious gaming development.
From game through play to transfer.
The SeGa Canvas provides a development framework for serious gaming and other interactive media and instruments. The framework guides developers in specifying the change of mind of participants and the corresponding properties of the tools.
The SeGa canvas separates the learning or experience environment from the field or work environment. This separation allows us to concentrate on three constituent parts that make a serious gaming system: the Game , the Play , and the Transfer .
Any serious gaming system is continuum. Building up the affection and gradually further the participants in their quest for change and growth. Consequently the use of the game and the nature of play will change over time. For instance, the first round typically is a familiarisation with the game, the second round obeys the game rules, and a third round instantiates play, thus tampering with the rules for the sake of the serious purpose. The Canvas helps you in detailing the system.
We are working with the Canvas on a regular, occasionally daily, basis. Since the first version of the canvas in the Spring of 2017 the Canvas has evolved gradually. The most striking change is the addition of the words Transfer and Metaphor, which respectively indicate an analytical and experiential way of learning, change, and growth.
Over time we gathered 30-plus cases where we successfully applied the Canvas, ranging from simulation learning, serious gaming for team performance, through instrumenting occupational vitality.
It is a long lingering wish to create a practical manual for working with the Canvas, illustrated with a rich set of example projects. This may take while, please be patient with us. In the mean time, the video below gives a brief introduction of the Canvas, applied to team performance training and assessment.
